What happens when you realize that “A Dollar and A Dream” has turned into “A Penny and a Nightmare”? Ottawa-born, Toronto-based rapper Harvey Stripes explores the concept on the follow-up to his 2011 debut.
Boasting 16 tracks, “A Penny and a Nightmare” sees Harvey speaking on everything for which he has become known — money, cars, exotic women and a highbrow lifestyle. But it also delves into deeper and grittier issues that include greed, abortion, loyalty, the justice system and more. “‘A Penny and a Nightmare’ is just me being real, being raw, being a genuine artist telling my story with hopes that the listeners can relate to what I’ve gone through,” says Harvey. “I feel like ‘A Penny and a Nightmare’ — even with the title of the album — shows that as glamorous as this life may seem, there’s still nightmares.”
Synonymous with heavy-hitter features, Harvey employs a supporting cast that compliments his style and includes Jadakiss (“Bought a Boat”), Juicy J (“Dolly”), Jeremih (“Any Way You Want It”) as well as Canadian talent such as Shi Wisdom (“A Penny and a Nightmare”), Captain Hooks (“Bleach Blonde”), Dru (“Ghost”), and more. “A Penny and a Nightmare” also expands Harvey’s sonic range courtesy of resident producer Beat Merchant as well as Deli, Pro Logic, Jeff Parris, Preezy and Daniel Worthy
